Minneapolis ReUse Center Closes
On December 11, The Green Institute closed its Minneapolis ReUse Center store. The ReUse Center has struggled in recent years to meet its costs. The Maplewood ReUse Center store (1727 E Hwy 36 E, Maplewood, MN 55109) will remain open.

Xcel Energy and the Green Institute have launched a free energy efficiency makeover to Lao Family Community in St. Paul. An energy audit determined ways the non-profit could save energy and money. Those measures will be implemented over the coming months. Many community partners donated things like windows, programmable thermostats, LED lights and time to complete this project. The goal is to save the facility 15% annually in energy bills.
As part of the project, staff will receive education about energy conservation, recycling and waste reduction practices. Click here for overview of the project and here for media release.

On November 9th the Northeast Chamber of Commerce held an event to inform local business owners about local environmentally focused programs. As one of the featured presenters, the Green Institute's Agatha Vaaler was able to present information on how the Food Service Energy Leadership Program helps indpendently owned, local food service business accomplish 10-15% energy savings through low and no cost meaures. Fighting Climate Change on the Ground, Press Release
The Green Institute is one of eight recipients of the 2010 Minneapolis climate change grants. The Green Institute project will create skills training opportunity for local contractors and businesses on commercial energy efficiency upgrades. Brake for Breakfast is Huge Success!
Over 400 people joined us for breakfast at the Green Institute on June 10th, 2010. Along with our tenants we hosted the largest breakfast for bikers and walkers on BikeWalk to Work Day! The bikers and walkers logged a cumulative 3580 miles (averaging 10.3 miles per person), Peace Coffee provided 300 cups of coffee, we served over 40 dozen eggs, and we only produced 1.25 pounds of trash!

Backyard Composting Workshop at Maplewood ReUse Center, Press Release

CERTs Launches Energy-Saving Campaign for Vending Machines, Press Release
Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs) has launched an energy saving campaign for vending machines. Minnesota schools, business and local government may qualify to participate in a special Vending Miser Bulk Buy Program. "Vending misers" are devices, which lower the energy usage of vending machines by about 40% without compromising the chilling necessary to keep the beverages cool.

Minnesota Schools Cutting Carbon, a 3 year initiative supported by Clean Energy Resource Teams, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Minnesota Office of Energy Security to give 100 Minnesota public high schools, colleges, and universities technical assistance and mini-grants to make their schools more energy efficient and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Anoka County's Community Action Program (ACCAP) is under the spotlight in the Star Tribune for exemplary initiative putting federal stimulus dollars to work. The Green Institute's Nancy Kelly has spent the last year gaining field training as a low-income energy auditor with ACCAP to build capacity and transferrable skills to enhancing programming and services so that the Green Institute better meets the energy needs of the surrounding residential and business community.

"On the evening of July 6, 2009 the Phillips Eco Enterprise Center's overall
airtightness was measured by The Energy Conservatory with the assistance of Green Institute Staff. The test result was 0.14 CFM per square foot of enclosure area at a pressure of 75 Pascals, which places the building comfortably in compliance with the most commonly referenced specifications for commercial building airtightness. These results and some observations made during the planning and execution of the tests

The Phillips Eco-Enterprise Tenants and Friends welcomed almost 300 to its green roof for a zero-waste event featuring free breakfast, Peace Coffee and Hub Coop bike checks. At least 249 guests biked a combined 1,782 miles to get to the event. Thanks to Eureka Recycling 46.4 pounds of organics was collected and less than half a bag of trash was produced.

The Green Institute Celebrates Solar, Press Release
The Green Institute opened the doors of its flagship eco-enterprise center on October 4, 2008. While the main feature may have been the 34 kilowatt solar photovoltaic array, the electric car rally was the showstopper, including custom retro-fits, solar-powered trailers, an electric three-wheeled Zap and Zen.

Visitors and owners mingle and discuss the mechanics of the electric cars on display at the Green Institute during the MRES Solar Tour 2008.

Bike to Work Day, Twin Cities Daily Planet
Metro CERTs and The Green Institute organized a free breakfast for bikers and walkers on the green roof of the Phillips Eco-Enterprise Center right off the Midtown Greenway. We had a record 120 bikers and walkers (including Mayor RT Rybak!). The Bridge, a newspaper covering the Cedar-Riverside, Seward and Southeast neighborhoods of Minneapolis covered the story.

New ReUse Center Store Opening in the East Metro, Press Release
The ReUse Center held the grand opening for its newest store on March 19, 2008. The ReUse Center will now serve the East Metro selling quality salvaged building materials from its Maplewood location at 1723 Hwy 36 East.
